The Overbeck Sisters and Keramics Studio
Overbeck Pottery in Keramics Studio Magazine
Beginning in 1899, Keramics Studio was a magazine published monthly catering to the art of china decoration and pottery design. It offered monthly competitions and editorial critiques, with many famous contributors. Among those submitting designs include Frederick Rhead, Marshall Fry, Adelaide Robineau, and of course, the Overbeck Sisters. It may be that more designs by the Overbecks were published than any other submissions.
Beginning in 1904, the sisters published mostly watercolor studies, with a few treatments for china borders. They continued with their submission through 1916, when their pottery consumed the majority of their time. The magazine published submissions from Hannah, Margaret, and Mary, with Hannah having the most, and Mary having the least.
The reader interest in the Overbeck studies and designs became so popular that almost the entire March of 1907 issue was devoted to the work of Margaret. They included swamp milkweed seed pods applied to sets of dinnerware, walnut, pine cone and tree borders, wild touch-me-not, poppy seed motifs, asters, primrose, landscapes of trees and houses, apples, and decorative landscapes.
Below are a few examples of artwork submitted to Keramics Studio by the Overbeck sisters throughout the years.
